The new year began with plenty of activity at the Institute of European Studies. In January and February, our staff and students continued to take part in research projects, public discussions, and academic initiatives focused on current European and international affairs. The first weeks of the year brought new publications, opportunities for students interested in careers in EU institutions, and engaging debates on contemporary geopolitical challenges. Together, these activities set a strong and inspiring start to the year at our Institute.

New Research Publications from Our Team
Research activity at the Institute continued strongly at the beginning of the year with the publication of new scholarly articles by our staff members. Dr. Jakub Bornio and MA Benjámin Lux published an article analyzing the rationalities behind Hungary’s policy toward the Russo-Ukrainian war, while Prof. Maciej Bachryj presented a comparative study of media coverage of migrants during the 2021 EU–Belarus border crisis. These publications contribute to ongoing academic debates on European security and international relations.

Webinar on Internships and Careers in EU Institutions
Supporting students in developing international careers remains an important priority of the Institute. In January, students were invited to participate in an online webinar dedicated to internships and employment opportunities in European Union institutions. The event, organized by the Warsaw School of Economics and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided practical information on recruitment processes, application procedures, and qualification tests for EU institutions.

Public Debate on the New Paradigm of International Politics
Prof. Piotr Grabowiec and PhD candidate Aleksander Krejckant from our Institute participated in public discussions addressing contemporary geopolitical challenges. A debate titled “The Great Game: A New Paradigm of International Politics” brought together experts to reflect on the changing dynamics of global power and international relations. Among the speakers was Prof. Piotr Grabowiec from the Institute of European Studies, who contributed his perspective on current developments shaping global politics.

New Publication on Sports Diplomacy in Central and Eastern Europe
Academic achievements of our researchers were further highlighted with the publication of the book “Sports Diplomacy and the Politicization of Sport in Central and Eastern Europe and the Post-Soviet Space.” Edited by Dr. Jakub Bornio, Michał Banasiak, and Mieszko Rajkiewicz, the work examines the complex relationship between sport and politics in the region and offers new insights into how sport can function as a tool of diplomacy and influence.

Student Achievements in the EU Simulation Project ConSIMium
Our students also continued to achieve remarkable successes. Natalia Zdziarska and Filip Szymański from the Institute were selected to join the elite Polish team participating in the ConSIMium project, a simulation of the decision-making process in the Council of the European Union. After a multi-stage recruitment process, they will travel to Brussels to take part in the simulation and experience the challenges of European diplomacy and policymaking firsthand.
